Bill Moore will return as the Santa Fe Fuego Manager. Bill was a fan favorite in the Pecos League despite finishing in last place. The Fuego lost 14 games by one run and really took a while to adjust to playing home games in Fort Marcy Park. Bill is looking to get more athletic in his position players. Despite playing in the smallest ballpark in North America, power is not the ingredient to win games. "Athletes will win games here, anyone can hit home runs here, athletes make the difference." It"s official the Santa Fe Fuego have joined the Pennant Race. For the third game in a row the Fuego got a great start from Anthony Machado. Combine this with Trent Evins and Kyle Cormier and the Fuego have finally gotten the quality starts they have needed to compete in the Pecos League. It is real simple for the Fuego to make the playoffs they must beat the team in the other dugout which happens to be the fourth place Trinidad Triggers. The White Sands Pupfish have completely collapsed. Trinidad is very inconsistant and Santa Fe is getting better with every game they play. Their record is currently 17-31 but they only trail Trinidad by three games who is 21-28. They still play the Triggers six more times, including a huge series at the end of the season.

A stronger wind blew through Kokernot Field tonight than in yesterday’s Game 1 of the Alpine Cowboys – Santa Fe Fuego 4 game series, fanning the flame of Cowboy resolve to continue to improve in every facet of the game; demonstrating a number of things for the young team and it’s loyal fans: “these Boys are in it to win it” and doing so in convincing fashion by beating the Fuego team 19-5 in a 4 hour+ game Saturday night in Alpine, TX. Did you want solid relief pitching by the Cowboys? Did you want to see the opposition Bull Pen crumble? Did you want to see the Cowboys hit double digits on the scoreboard? The game had that by the before the 6th inning was over. There wasn’t much to say in the way of positives for Santa Fe. Cowboy’s Head Coach Ryan Stevens called it “a good team effort. We used 5 pitchers who all came out and attacked the zone and did their job. Our hitters came up with timely hits and you can’t ask better than that.” He continued to reiterate one ofDJ Stinsman helps the Roswell Invaders down the Santa Fe Fuego

When you look at rosters in the Pecos League you see lots of fresh faces with many recent graduates or players released from Pro Ball. There are some veterans who are mixed into the league that are in the late 20"s. After taking a glance at the roster of the Santa Fe Fuego you see Rodney Tafoya at 48 years old and he is currently in the starting rotation for the Fuego. When you first glance at Rodney you really can"t tell his age. Rodney is a local legend in Northern New Mexico where he has dominated every level of ball he can find. He has won and counted 271 wins in his career. He has an accomplished and well followed website http://www.rodtafoya.com Currently Rodney has started two of the three games that the Fuego have won, although he has not registered a win. Rodney"s experience with extreme altitude of Santa Fe has allowed him to be one of Santa Fe"s most consistant starters. Rodney has traveled the world playing baseball. Rodney signed two affliated contracts in his lifetime. In 1989 with the Boise Hawks and in 1990 with the Erie Sailors. He pitched in Juarez Mexico when it was safe to cross the border in 1984-1985. Rodney has pitched in every MSBL Tournament in North America. If the Fuego weren"t in Santa Fe he would be traveling across the country chasing tournaments to pitch in. Rodney was instrumental in the hearing in favor of the Pro Baseball coming to Santa Fe. He started opening day at Fort Marcy Park in front of a packed house. Bill Moore is excited to have Rodney Tafoya on the Santa Fe Fuego. Andrew Dunn is excited to have Rodney Tafoya pitch in the Pecos League. Rodney has pitched in Alamogordo and Santa Fe and plans to pitch in all six ball parks before the season is complete. when you see the lefty for Santa Fe wearing number 32 you know you will have a competitor on the mound that night for the Fuego.

The Pecos League signed a two year contract for the Fuego to play in Fort Marcy Park. The Fuego"s Vendors will be able to sell beer, however there will be a three beer limit at all games and no beer can be sold past the 6th inning. The Pecos League will be watched closely be anti-alcohol groups in Santa Fe. Numerous Groups exist and have been trying to find ways to stop the Fuego from selling beer at the games. The City of Santa Fe will not allow a beer sign to be hung from the outfield fence at Fort Marcy Park. Fans are very excited to have a professional team in Santa Fe in the Pecos League for two years and beyond. "We are committed to Santa Fe for the long run." says Pecos League commisioner Andrew Dunn. The Santa Fe Fuego will look good on the field no matter what their record is. They will wear Black Jerseys with Orange and Red "Santa Fe" Lettering. With a rising number of teams choosing to wear black in the Pecos League (Trinidad, White Sands) The Fuego will wear Alternate Red Jerseys with their SF Logo on their chest.
The Fuego will wear Black Helmets and Black Hats with a red bill.
The Fuego"s logo is an interlocking SF with a ZIA in the Background as well as rising flames. Colors are Black, Orange and Red. The colors represent the State of New Mexico, The City of Santa Fe and will look great a uniform. Santa Fe also plans to sell merchandise with its popular colors. T-Shirts and Hats are currently for sell on the Fuego"s website and jerseys will be for sale within three weeks. 2012 will be the inaugural season for the Santa Fe Fuego and they open Spring Training on May 1 and they will open the regular season in Trinidad on May 8th in the first regular season game of the Pecos League for 2012. It will also mark Trinidad"s inaugural game. Santa Fe will play 70 games in the months of May, June and July. For more information visit the team website at http://www.santafefuego.comThe Santa Fe Baseball Team has been
The Santa Fe Baseball Team has been through alot of they haven"t even stepped on the field. Today the Pecos League has announced the Santa Fe team will be called the Santa Fe Fuego. The name and logo of the Santa Fe Mountain Lions was too similar to the Penn State Nittany Lions. Also with the Florida Marlins changing their colors it would be hard to get gear in Teal. Robert Romero lead the way for the name change. The colors will be Yellow, Red and Black. The logo will be released in the next two weeks and will incorporate a Zia and fire. Fuego means fire in Spanish and is commonly spoken in sports with the term en Fuego. After three tries (Zozobras, Sangres and Mountain Lions) the Pecos League decided to let the people of Santa Fe take control of the naming. "Many people suggested the Senators and I felt that was not a good name with the Ottawa Senators in the NHL and the Harrisburg Senators in MILB. We really heard some crazy names but this one will stick. Many people started to play the Penn State Card so we needed to change immediately. I never realized how similar the Mountain Lion Hats were to Penn State." says Andrew Dunn Commisioner of the Pecos League. The website will remain the same http://santafe.pecosleague.com Fans who bought a Mountain Lions hat can exchange in for a Fuego Hat once the Fuego Hats are made. "This has been quite a ride already and we haven"t even started. I don"t care what we are called I am ready to hit the field. " says field manager Bill Moore. The Santa Fe Fuego will be holding a tryout on December 11th at Fort Marcy Park at 1:00 MST both Moore and Dunn will be in attendence seeking players for the 2012 season.
Pecos League wins in Santa Fe in ex
Pecos League wins in Santa Fe in extra innings 5-4. The Santa Fe Fuego have their biggest win and they haven"t even taken the field. Councilor Ron Trujillo picked up the win, Mayor David Coss picked up the save.
Winning pitcher R Trujillo 1-0,Losing Pitcher P Bushee 0-1, Save D Coss (1)
Santa Fe legend Rod Tafoya was a major force and he wasn"t even on the mound. David Coss surprised everyone with his vote of yes bringing the Mountain Lions. City Councilors voted 5-4 to now allow An Ordinace Amending Article 23-6 SFCC 1987 to Permit the Limted Sale and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages at Fort Marcy Ball Park for Professional Baseball Games.
The Santa Fe Mountain Lions needed to win a city council election allowing the team to sell alcohol at Fort Marcy Park. After 3 hours of deliberation and public speaking the votes were split right down the middle forcing the Mayor to break the tie. Carmichael Dominguez, Patti Bushee, Miguel Chavez and Chris Calvert voted against the proposal. Ron Trujillo, Matthew Ortiz, Rosemary Romero and Rebecca Wurzburger voted for the proposal. Mayor David Coss broke a tie to approve the league"s proposal to use the ballpark for a new team here and to allow limited beer sales during games. Councilor Ron Trujillo, who introduced the resolution, said he regrets that the proposal was so divisive but sees it as an entertainment opportunity for the city and an encouragement for young, aspiring athletes. Numerous opposition groups gave stories about how bad alcohol is to life, society and how bad it would be for the Mountain Lions to sell alcohol.
What started as a simple proposal to bring pro baseball into Santa Fe turned into a nasty campaign with a large opposition group and arguments that divided many councilors and long time city residents. Longtime local baseball fan Mark Ortiz said "We need baseball in Santa Fe, this a great opportunity." Las Cruces General Manager and longtime Santa Fe Resident Miguel Salcedo said "I knew they would get their heads on straight on get this thing through. This is typical process for Santa Fe." Rod Tafoya said "Someone is going to hit 50 home runs here this summer. A good left handed power hitter. This is a dream of mine." Tafoya has played independent baseball for 13 years and was one of the big stories of the night. He is a left handed pitcher that pitched in the Northwest League for Mal Fichman. Tafoya is currently on Spring Training Roster and was the most popular speaker of the night. "I have played in Tabasco, Mexico, Boise, Piedras Negras, Regina, and all over the US and Mexico. I have never been in a park that didn"t sell beer. It would be a stupid idea and no one would try it." His statements were applauded by the standing room only crowd inside of city hall.
The Q and A with Andrew Dunn had mixed reviews
Chris Calvert grilled Andrew Dunn on what profits would be, what the percentage of sponsorships come from beer and if signage could be sold all the way around the outfield. Patti Bushee stated that the hockey team didn"t get alcohol. Carmichael Dominguez was a swing vote that went on the no side, he stated he didn"t have enough facts or the information he had requested to vote for the baseball team. He didn"t believe the Pecos League had enough credibility despite the established tenure and commitment to the State of New Mexico. Miguel Chavez was going to vote no because of alcohol no mattter about baseball or not.
Andrew Dunn commissioner of the Pecos League states: "We want to play baseball in Santa Fe New Mexico. Budweiser is on course to be our biggest sponsor and beer sales are required in every professional sport to make things happen. We don"t care about politics and we didn"t realize how large of an issue this would be. For those it divided we plan to re-unit them via the game of baseball. We plan on the Mountain Lions being a fixture at Fort Marcy Park for the next decade. This is great day for the city of Santa Fe and the Pecos League."The Pecos League has been bombarded
The Pecos League has been bombarded with questions from citizens, fans, critics, and everyone else who has a 505 area code. This beer issue has really taken off and people are either on one side or the other.
Here are the facts:
The Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs wants a to play baseball in Fort Marcy Park in the Summer of 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe happens to be one of the political cities in the United States, very different than any town in the entire Pecos League Region. The citizens of Santa Fe and the leaders of the city of Santa Fe are very familiar with the Pecos League and the benefits the league has brought to other New Mexico Cities. The Pecos League is not asking for $500,000 to bring a team in, we are willing to accept Fort Marcy in current condition and grow with the team and the league. The Pecos League obviously wants to be in Santa Fe to increase exposure of the Pecos League and to bring family entertainment to Santa Fe, a city that actually needs it. "This should be expected in Santa Fe, political debates are the norm. If they get beer passed this could be a big event, Fort Marcy can be perfect for this league." says Las Cruces Vaqueros General Manager Miguel Salcedo, who was born and raised in Santa Fe. Miguel has also been with the Vaqueros since the team was formed in 2009 and sees great potential in Santa Fe.
Will Webber is the person that got the ball rolling with the Santa Fe Team. He was the man who spearheaded talks between Robert Romero, Ronald Trujillo and Andrew Dunn. The Pecos League tried to put a team in Santa Fe in 2011 and begged Santa Fe for an exhibition game in the 2011 season when Ruidoso played Roswell in Clovis and in Pueblo. Andrew Dunn went to Santa Fe twice. Originally the two teams were supposed to play at Fort Marcy and made the Pueblo game a doubleheader and moved another game in the series to Roswell. Barbara Lopez with the Santa Fe Parks and Recreation Committee said the field was not available under any circumstances. The facts were the field was sitting idle and was used as a backup field for an AABC League.
In an interview with Will Webber last week Pecos League Commissioner Andrew Dunn stated that he wanted to play in Santa Fe no matter what for the 2012 season. The purpose of the interview was to announce the hiring of Bill Moore. This rattled leaders of the city and the city council as they are trying to get votes so alcohol can be passed. Many people read the article and took it that the Mountain Lions were coming to Santa Fe no matter what. Well Mountain Lions are very mobile animals and can be a very mobile team. If the situation is not right the Mountain Lions can move to one of many cities within the region. The Pecos League wants the Mountain Lions to play in Santa Fe. There are two swing votes that can go either way. Current Vote count is believed to be 3-3, if the swing votes split the tie is broken by the Mayor. Many people would love for this to happen to put pressure on the Mayor.
"Let"s play ball" says Bill Moore who will be head coach of Mountain Lions. The Pecos League has to move forward with signing of players and putting a quality ballclub together. "We are going to have six teams, regardless of this election, Coach Moore needs to get to work. Anyone who has ever worked with Bill Moore will tell you he is a great coach and great individual, I think the people of Santa Fe will love him. We are baseball people we don"t like going to all of these meetings and playing games we just want a situation where we have a chance to be viable and the rest we will take care of" says Andrew Dunn Pecos League Commisioner. "Alot of the players are considering signing with Pecos League have Santa Fe at the top of their list. Players from across the Country know where it is unlike all of the other cities. "
The conversation that keeps coming up is the hockey team the Santa Fe Roadrunners, the Roadrunners were a minor league hockey team that failed because they didnt sell beer. They played out of the Genoveva Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe. The team lasted 3 years but didn"t sell beer and ultimately moved to Topeka, Kansas. The Pecos League and NAHL Hockey League have absolutely nothing in common. The NAHL Hockey League had huge long expensive road trips such as all over Texas, Springfield and Texarkana. Hockey dried up all over the South after the NHL Strike. The Roadrunners didn"t have beer, but in their defense Santa Fe has no connection with the game of hockey, there is no heritage or connection. No one in Santa Fe grew up playing hockey that is for sure. Baseball is a different story. Many Santa Fe natives are huge baseball fans and the game has been in Northern New Mexico for generations. And when the Mountain Lions take the field they will be playing against much closer opponents that people actually know such as Las Cruces, Roswell, Alamogordo, Trinidad and Alpine. The Pecos League is New Mexico Based and has three others teams in New Mexico and Santa is in the center of the footprint.
There have been talks of the city putting up money for the Pecos League to come and not sell beer. The Pecos League is open to all options as long as it a viable option. If it shows strong commitment from the City of Santa Fe that they want the Pecos League and that is what is important. Like our other cities we plan on being in Santa Fe permanently not for 1-2 years. We need commitment and support. For information on the Mountain Lions visit http://santafe.pecosleague.comThe Santa Fe Mountain Lions are beg
The Santa Fe Mountain Lions are beginning to solidify their 2012 season. The major news today was the hiring of field manager Bill Moore. Bill comes to Santa Fe from Bisbee where he served as head coach for the Bisbee Copperkings.
Here is Q and A with Bill Moore What type of ballclub are you going to build in 7000 foot elevation?
Pitching that can keep the ball down.
What do you know about Santa Fe?
Very little, I know it is the capital of New Mexico and it is an historic town, I am looking forward to establishing Pro Baseball in Santa Fe.
You were originally going to manage in the Pecos League in 2011 in Bisbee, but the Copperkings did not get into the Pecos League. What were your thoughts on the Pecos League not getting into Bisbee?
I was very disappointed at the time, and now with a job opening with a great market I am glad the way things worked out.
What do you think about the name Mountain Lions and colors?
If we can play like a Mountain Lion will fight then we will be alright.
November 9th is judgement day for t
November 9th is judgement day for the Pecos League in Santa Fe. Although the Prelimary Schedule is out, 4 managers are hired, teams are beginning to sign players. The final pieces of the league will be answered at a city council meeting in Santa Fe at 7 PM at Santa Fe City Hall. The issue up for debate is selling beer at historic Fort Marcy Park where currently there is an ordinance that prohibits the sale of beer at this park. The people that will be making the decision will be the 8 city councilors. Currently the unofficial vote is 3-3 with two unknowns. To get this resolution changed the Pecos League needs a 5-3 vote or a 4-4 vote. In the event of a 4-4 vote the Mayor would be the one called upon to break the tie. This is not the first time the Pecos League has fought this same issue or the 2nd. Due to strict New Mexico alcohol laws, Las Cruces (January 2010), Alamogordo (2011), and Roswell (2011) had to pass beer through their city council. Roswell process was very tough.
Although there was opposition to the process in these other New Mexico Cities, it is nothing like the Pecos League is experiencing in Santa Fe. There is a group of citizens that are rallying boycotts against Alcohol, "Not in Backyard" is their slogan. This group is an experienced group of debators that constantly fight alcohol events in Santa Fe. The group is not opposed to the Pecos League and actually supports the Pecos League idea in Santa Fe. Just preferably without beer. The AABC team that occupies Fort Marcy Park in the Summer has no problem with scheduling conflicts at Fort Marcy.
Ronald Trujillo is the city councilor that has requested this ordinance change be put on docket. He has been a baseball coach for 20 years and does not want to let this opportunity go by. The cities legal council has remained neutral, the city manager Robert Romero is a huge baseball fan, his nephew Thomas Romero lead the Las Cruces Vaqueros in apperences in the 2012 season as a left handed reliever.
The Pecos League already has a manager set in place if alcohol passes. The Team would be named the Mountain Lions and occupy historic Fort Marcy Park. If alcohol is not passed on November 9th then the Pecos League has several backup options. Where will the 6th team go?- Durango Colorado-Although this would expand the league"s footprint and would make things further, the schedule already has teams making Northern Swings to Trinidad. Great Fans, great ballpark and a quality market for baseball.
- Taos New Mexico-currently has no lights, no beer in process of getting both. Has a sports alliance that is interested in bringing events in.
- Bisbee Arizona-Warren Ballpark quite possibly one of finest ballparks in terrority, many College Teams are fighting over field, Copperkings might collapse
- Raton New Mexico (adjoins Trinidad would save the league huge travel money), city is very small, would be tough to support a team.
- Pecos Texas (Alpine"s choice, wants in the league)-despite small size they have a very good ballpark with potential. Wouldn"t have to fight New Mexico alcohol laws to sell beer in county facility.
- Bring back the Carlsbad Bats Travel Team, the bats played very well in the 2nd half of the year, manager Ryan Powell thinks he could go .500 if he managed the entire season. The Bats were a fan favorite throughout SouthEast New Mexico from the day the Powell took over.
