Fans are invited to come to Fort Marcy one more time in 2015. The Santa Fe Fuego will have a table at Zozobra.

Zozobra is a unique cultural event staged each year by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe as a fiery and exciting kick-off to the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe. The "Burning of Will Shusters Zozobra is presented annually the Friday of Labor Day weekend.

Friday evening at dusk the people of Santa Fe, friends new and old, all make their way to Fort Marcy Park where the Zozobra pageant takes place. Located just a few blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Zozobra, also known as Old Man Gloom (OMG) (pictured left), is the inspiration of artist Will Shuster and was introduced as part of the Fiesta events in 1926.

Shusters creation first appeared as a six-foot puppet and has since grown to about 50 feet. Made of muslin and stuffed with shredded paper Zozobra is an eerie, groaning, flailing character who appears to be part ghost and part monster. Amid fireworks and the ceremonial dances of ghosts and fire a growling Zozobra is set ablaze and it is said as the fire consumes the beast so go the feelings of gloom and doom from the past year. The flames renewing the hope and optimism of the gathered celebrants. The ever increasing desperation of the howling Zozobra can be heard echoing throughout Santa Fe.

Rodriguezs stellar debut leads Miners to shutout win

Box Score

AUGUSTA, NJ – Francisco Rodriguez dominated on the mound in his first start with the Sussex County Miners. The left-hander fired six shutout, one-hit innings, and struck out seven men, as he lead the Miners (29-41) to a 5-0 victory over the Quebec Capitales at Skylands Stadium.

Hours after signing his contract with the Miners, Rodriguez (1-0) took the ball against one of the top offenses in the Can-Am League and was nearly unhittable from the outset. Rodriguez worked one time through the Capitales (42-30) order before he finally surrendered a hit.

Yuniesky Gurriel doubled with two outs in the third inning to break up the no-hitter and Jonathan Malo nearly knocked him in. Malo hit a sharp line drive to right-center, but Miners centerfielder Jamal Austin

No one covers more ground in the Fort Marcy outfield than Rheannon Abeyta.

Just 9 years old, she scoops up more baseballs than any Fuego outfielder.

Such is the luxury of being a kid with razor-sharp instincts who resides on the other side of the chainlink fence that separates the lush green grass of right field and the endless domain that exists for foul balls and home runs.

"The secret," she says, pausing for effect between pitches of a recent Pecos League game between Santa Fe and Las Vegas, "is getting there fast. I run as fast as I can."

Easy enough.

Abeyta is one of a small army of kids who routinely patrol Fort Marcy Ballparks periphery looking for balls smacked out of play. On any given night, dozens of kids roam the areas in foul ball territory waiting for something to land at their feet.

On this particular night, 34 baseballs were sent out of play, either as foul balls that landed in the parking lot or in the 25-foot deep arroyo that separates the ballpark from the adjacent playground at Fort Marcy Complex. Abeyta was the first to get one when a line-drive home run pinballed between the trees beyond right field and landed in the sand at the bottom of the dry stream bed.

Positioned perfectly with her parents at the end of the foot bridge not far from the right field foul pole, she slipped between a narrow opening in the fence, slid down the dirt embankment and scooped up her prize without another kid in sight. By her dads count, she has at least 30 Fuego balls at home.

"I dont have a favorite," Rheannon says. "I like them all."

Despite repeated attempts by the teams public address announcer to bribe kids to return them for later use, most requests are gleefully ignored.

Foul balls are free. Home run balls are valued possessions that cost nothing.

Finders keepers, losers weepers.

Anyone who has ever attended a professional game knows theres always a chance a freebie gift could come flying into the stands at any moment. Catching one of them makes the recipient the envy -- if only for a second -- of all those seated nearby.

Each ball costs roughly $8 to $10, according to a league source. Cartons of them are shipped to each club, the teams logo stamped into a spot near the seams. Its a seal of uniqueness that makes the Pecos League experience even more real for anyone lucky enough to grab one.

"Every night we rub up four dozen brand new baseballs and every night we might wind up with only 12 left," says Bill Moore, the grizzled veteran manager of the Santa Fe Fuego. "It would be nice to get some of them back, but I understand what it means to get one of those things. Hell, I probably wouldnt give it back either."

The teams attempt to lure the balls back by having its "Shagger of the Week" competition didnt take long to run dry. Used to be, the kid who returned the most balls in any given week got a free T-shirt from the concession stand. It then became free candy.

Now, basically nothing works.

"Yeah, why would I go give one back if all they give me is a candy?" says Howie Sena, another 9-year-old who keeps one eye on the field at all times. "I mean, they might give you a ring pop or something, but why do that? Id rather keep it."

On this night, Sena got his prize when he snared a foul ball that plopped heavily onto the grassy hill between the Fuego bullpen and the nearby parking lot. His Little League teammate, Roman Parrish, had never even been to a Fuego game, let alone caught a free ball. Before heading home he had at least three.

While Abeyta was with her family on one of the bridges, Parrish sat alongside Jeremiah Hernandez, 8, on the other crossing behind the power alley in right-center. Both kids had an extra weapon -- a bike. Hernandez repeatedly missed potential souvenirs when hed ride off in one direction and then have a ball land in his earlier spot just moments later.

"I think you have to kind of plan where the ball is going to go," says Aaron Casados, a remarkably fast 10-year-old from Las Cruces who has spent many a night at Fort Marcy while visiting family this summer. "If theres a righthander up, you want to be over here by first base. If its a lefty, you have to run real fast over by third. Its a whole thing."

Before this night, Casados had collected 21 balls. By his count, hes held on to 17. The other four he gave away; one of them to a little girl who was standing nearby but didnt get there in time.

"Yeah, I have a lot of baseballs just for me so I dont care about giving some away," he says. "I think my mistake with some foul balls is I run so fast that I get there before everyone else, but when I get there I cant always find them."

At Fort Marcy, baseballs easily find the parking lot behind home and down the first base line. They bounce wildly between cars, sometimes taking out an unsuspecting windshield or denting a hood. Most of the players and team employees have war stories in that regard.

For Hernandez, his night finally did produce a favorable result. After watching helplessly as one ball after another went to another kid, his grandfather finally helped him grab a home run ball late in the game when a ball nosedived into the ditch just a few feet from where he was waiting.

"I think every kid wants one of these things," Parrish said, looking over in Hernandezs direction. "I cant believe Ive never gotten one before this. Theyre so easy to get, too. You could have a whole collection."

Fort Marcy ball field sinkholes shut down baseball game

News Image
Jul 24 2015 12:00AM

Sinkholes that developed in the bas

Sinkholes that developed in the baseball field at Fort Marcy Park caused the cancellation of the Santa Fe Fuego game on Thursday night.

Team general manager Yvonne Encinias tells SFR that the problem appears to have resulted from some kind of plumbing malfunction in the fields irrigation system.

"It could be just be the way we dealt with some of the moisture. There has been just so much," she says.

The half-dozen soggy holes that range in size from a foot to 3 feet in diameter wouldve been dangerous for players, she says.

While city officials were not on hand to deal with the problem that players discovered around 5 pm, Encinias says a city park manager assured her a crew would get the field in playable condition in time for Fridays scheduled 6 pm game against the Trinidad Triggers. The teams are set to face off every night through Tuesday.

The Pecos Baseball league is heading into the final games of the season. Standings on the league website say the Fuego, who last year won the league championship game, are currently the second place team in the Northern Division.

And in other news, the cancelled game means the crowd wasnt subjected to this editors rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, also scheduled for the game. Dodged that bullet.

Fuego shortshop shines in Pecos League

Santa Fe New Mexican

Eddie Newton came a long way to play for the Santa Fe Fuego this season. The Pecos League all-star shortstop grew up near Boston and was discovered in a one-day tryout in the spring. Since arriving in Santa Fe, all he has done is hit, field and become one of the leagues best everyday players.

Posted: Sunday, June 28, 2015 10:30 pm | Updated: 11:55 pm, Sun Jun 28, 2015.

By Will Webber The New Mexican

The road to the Pecos League leads through ... Massachusetts?

Eddie Newton is the first one to say hed never heard of the Pecos League and almost next to nothing about Santa Fe. This spring, the two virtual unknowns in his life converged into a career opportunity that has made him into an all-star in his first year as a professional player.

"Really, the only thing I knew about Santa Fe is that it was in the mountains," Newton said.

On Monday, Newton will be part of the starting lineup in the Pecos League, getting the nod at shortstop for the defending champion Santa Fe Fuego. Hes one of six players from Santa Fe on the North Division roster, which will be managed by the Fuegos Bill Moore.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Fort Marcy Ballpark.

To think Newton is playing such a big role in anything like this may come as a surprise to those who saw him play during his freshman season at Merrimack College, a tiny liberal arts school near his hometown of North Billerica, Mass. Merrimack and Newtons family home lie within the Boston suburbs, a place where New Mexico seems like its a million miles away.

"It was a great place to grow up, to play sports," Newton said. "My dad was more of a basketball guy, but I kind of took to baseball and hed just take me out and play ball and hit grounders to me all the time. He was good about it and it really helped."

Those grounders came on the uneven grass fields near Newtons neighborhood. They were followed by a college career where things didnt exactly go well his first year out of Arlington Catholic High. He appeared in 34 games that season, batting just .143 with two stolen bases.

So far this season, hes one of the top hitters in the Pecos League, batting .450 with seven home runs and 11 steals in 12 attempts. For about 25 games he was hovering around .500, an unreal figure considering how Newtons college career started.

"What you get in a player like Eddie," begins Fuego manager Bill Moore, "is a young man who puts in the work and learns about the game faster than about anyone. He does so many things right, and even though hes not the biggest talker on the team, hes one of those players who talks enough to the players around him to make him a leader."

Moore has never been one to name team captains, and hes not about to start now. If he were, hed be hard-pressed to pass up Newton for that role.

"I wouldnt say hes the heart of the team, but hes -- well, he might be the heart," Moore said. "Hes not the most emotional guy out there, but he does work hard."

A third baseman for the majority of his time in college, Newton has become the everyday shortstop in Moores infield. It seems all those days of fielding ground balls on the uneven grass near his familys home prepared him well for the lumpy infield at Fort Marcy.

"Thats funny," he said. "Its all about reading the hops and understanding how the infield plays, thats it. But, yeah, I did have a lot of practice going after ground balls in a place like this."

The youngest of five children, Newton was the only boy in a household where responsibilities were a staple of growing up.

"Ive been doing chores since as long as I can remember; thats one of those things my parents were so good at," Newton said. "For them, it was all about teaching you to be responsible and learn how to take care of your own work. When I got to college, I was lucky enough to have a coach who was kind of like that, a guy who handed out blue collar awards for the top player after every win. It taught me to keep my head down, not get too high or too low, and just do my job."

Undrafted out of college, Newtons playing days appeared to be destined for adult leagues in the Boston area -- which he was completely fine with. One of his teammates on one of those teams happened to play in the Pecos League last season, however, and he told Newton that the league was planning to conduct a tryout near his home.

Fuego pitcher Alex Teal was tabbed as the teams representative for the one-day workout. Moore called him and said to keep his eye open for a potential shortstop. He found one in Newton.

"I had a good tryout, I guess," Newton said. "I didnt hit it the way I wanted, but I did good work in the field. I think thats what got Alexs attention. Everything kind of fell into place from there."

Moore said it only took a brief report from Teal to get Newton a contract.

"Alex knew what I was looking for, and what I wanted was a player who could field his position, hit the ball a little and come in here with the right attitude," Moore said.

A devoted fan of all things Boston, Newton is a creature of habit who has made his home away from home the cozy confines of Fort Marcy. Whereas most players scatter for a quick break after daily batting practice, he stays at the yard and does whatever he has to in order to get better.

Moore notices that, saying that work ethic is something that defines all great players.

"Its why hes an All-Star," Moore said. "The kid worked hard to be here. Hes earned it."

The tough Santa Fe Fuego (8-2) showed no mercy against the Garden City Wind (2-12) as they picked up their second win of the seven-game series. The final score of Wednesday's game was 8-11.

Ethan Rosebeck started the game on the mound with a lead-off walk to Eddie Grimaldo, who was quickly caught stealing after a missle from Wind catcher Tyler Lundgren. Garden City got two more quick outs to end the inning.

Garden City kept Santa Fe third baseman Ruben Rivera busy in the bottom of the first, as Shea Bell, Gabe Cook, and Larry Rodriguez all grounded out to third.

The Fuego put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the second with another lead-off walk and an error before Rivera doubled down the left field line and a single up the right side by Matthew Pardo.

Brandon Cooksey started the bottom of the second with a laser to right field, recording his fourth home run of the season. Cody Ellis, Lundgren, and Rosebeck kept the bats alive with three consecutive singles. With the bases loaded, Jacob Gonzalez took an RBI hit by pitch to tie the game. The Wind took a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly by Bell.

Santa Fe quickly regained the lead after yet another lead-off walk and a two-run home run to right field by Chevas Numata in the top of the third.

Their lead was extended in the top of the fourth, 8-2, with most of the damage done with two outs. The half-inning consisted of four singles, a double, and a home run from the Fuego. The home run was Numata's second two-run homer of the game.

Taylor Simpson took charge on the mound for the Wind in the fifth, relieving Rosebeck. Simpson tossed an efficient inning with a rare popup to the mound, which he opted to catch himself. He gave up a single to right center, but no harm was done as Fuego pitcher Kahana Neal grounded out into a double play to end the inning.

Cooksey's bat remained hot in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to left field, scoring Rodriguez and keeping the Wind within four runs of the Fuego.

The Fuego continued to prove dominant in the sixth, adding another pair of runs with a third two-run home run of the game, this time from shortstop Eddie Newton.

Garden City added two more runs in the seventh to bring the score to 6-10. Cook started the inning with a single to left field and advanced to third on a Fuego error with Rodriguez at bat. Cook managed to score on a wild pitch from Fuego relief pitcher Briston Clingaman. Rodriguez followed suit and crossed home after a sacrifice fly to left by James Floyd.

Santa Fe added its 11th and final run of the night in the eighth.

Refusing to give up, the Wind scored two more runs in the eighth against reliever Ryan Harper. Pinch hitter Benly Ramos was the first to cross the plate after reaching with a hit by pitch. Gonzalez put the ball in play and ended up with a double as right fielder David Brandt lost the ball in the lights.

Ramos scored on Bell's unassisted out to the first baseman Numata shortly before Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch. With only one out, Cook stepped up and hit his third single of the night, putting on a solid performance. He was forced out, however, on a fielder's choice to Rodriguez for the second time of the night.

Rodriguez stole second and third, recording a notable three stolen bases on the night.

Despite numerous comeback attempts, the Wind was unable to defeat the Fuego, dropping the second game of the series 8-11.

Also making appearances on the mound for the Wind were Jacob Terry and Chip White, and Ryan Blinderman.

Rosebeck ended his outing with eight runs (one unearned), 10 hits, two strikeouts, and three walks in four innings pitched. He picked up the loss in his first start of the season.

Kahana Neal (2-0) picked up his second win in five innings pitched, giving up four runs, eight hits, and one walk. Neal also recorded three strikeouts.

The series continues at Clint Lightner Stadium on Thursday evening with the first pitch being thrown at 6:30.
